Whereas the king lately appointed them to enquire by the oath of lawful men of co. Lancaster what malefaetors and disturbers of the peace went to Liverpol with banners displayed in a warlike manner in the presence of the justices of oyer and terminer appointed in that county, and who killed, mutilated and robbed several men there, wounded others grievously and hindered the justices from showing justice to those complaining before them and who perpetrated other crimes there, and at nwhose procuration these things were done, and who wittingly received those malefaetors afterwards or aided and abetted them or who assisted them in any way, and to bear and determine the premises according to the law and custom of England and the king's commission to them, and afterwards the king ordered Richard de Wylughby by writ to have all the rolls, records, processes, indictments and other memoranda for the time when he was justice with other lieges to hear and determine divers trespasses and excesses committed by the king's ministers and others in that county, together with the writs, commissions and other affairs touching the same, before the king in chancery on the octaves of Hilary last, so that the king might cause further to be done what should be ordained by the council, and although he delivered those indictments etc. in chancery, yet for certain causes the king remits to the justices under the half-seal the said indictments which are not yet determined, except the indictments of those whom the king has pardoned the suit of his peace for their felonies which the king has caused to be withdrawn from the rolls and which he wishes to be determined elsewhere, and all the rolls, records, etc. ordering them to inspect these and to proceed to the release of those indicted, according to the law and custom of the realm, except of John son of Riehard de Radeclyf, Richard son of William de Radeclyf, John de Radeclyf, parson of Bury church, Thurstan de Holand of Salfordshire, Henry son of Henry de Bury, knight, William son of Robert de Radeclyf, Robert son of John de Legh of co. Enrolment of deed addressed to all the sons of Holy Mother Church testifying that whereas Master Pbobert de Treng and Bichard de Aledmenhann and John son of John de Byssheye were jointly enfeoffed by the charter of Master John Wyliot, son of Thomas Wyliot of Suthmymmes, of all his lands, rents and services in Suthmymmes, co. Middlesex, and in Byssheye, Langeleye, Watford, Caysho and the town of St. Albans, co. Hertford, and also in Hampthull, Maldon, Hornton, co. Bedford, and in certain other places in those counties, as is fully contained in his charter thereupon, and whereas Master Robert and John son of John have surrendered to Richard by their deeds all the estate which they held in the said lands, Richard has granted to Master Robert and to Master John Wyliot all the said lands with all their appurtenances. Order, upon petition of John atte Hegge and John Smyth, by mainprise of William atte Westende, Richard atte Merssh, Richard Ladde and William Herry to deliver up their cattle taken to witherman by virtue of the king's writ concerning the replevin of cattle of Nicholas abbot of Waltham Holy Cross by them taken and unlawfully withheld; as the sheriff returned that he might not, replevy the same for that he repaired to the place where they were impounded but might have no view of them, wherefore the king ordered him to take cattle of the said John and John as aforesaid, and their petition shews that they took the abbot's cattle for money due to the king by reason of the fifteenth and moiety of a fifteenth last granted to the king, and that a plea is pending thereupon before the justices at Westminster.

Order, upon petition of John Kyngesson of Waynflete ' lytster,' [if] he shall find mainpernors under a pain for which the sheriff will answer that he shall prosecute his writ, and to have him before the king in the octaves of St. John Baptist ready to be surrendered in case he shall be adjudged a neif of Gilbert Umfreville, or shall not prosecute his writ, to set the petitioner free, having there this writ and the security so taken, as lately the king ordered the sheriff to replevy the petitioner who is taken and held captive by Gilbert Umfreeille, John Knaresburgh (Knaresbourgh), John Gunny, John Yoman, Robert atte Dam, Stephen Hegge, William Stobbes and Thomas Polayn, unless taken by special order of the king or the chief justice, or for manslaughter, the forest, or other charge for which he is not replevisable; and the sheriff returned that the said Gilbert claims him for his neif, and therefore he might not replevy him; and now his petition shews that he is a free man, and ready to prove his freedom, that he has brought a writ of trespass against the said Gilbert and the others to be pleaded before the king on the aforesaid day, and is purposed to prosecute the same.

Order, upon petition of John Kyngesson of Waynflete ' litster,' to proceed to rendering of judgment in the plea hereinafter mentioned, the allegation of Gilbert Umfravylle and the terms of the late king's writ de procedendo notwithstanding; as at suit of John Kyngesson, shewing that before the late king he impleaded Gilbert Umfravyille, John Knaresburgh, John Gunny, John Yoman, Robert atte Dam, Stephen Hegge, William Stobbes and Thomas Polayn for that on Thursdav before Easter II Henrv IV by force of arms, namelv with swords and staves, the said Gilbert with the other defendants did assault him at Waynflete, and did beat, wound and imprison him from that date until the Nativity of the Virgin following contrary to the peace, damages £ 200, that the said Gilbert came by Thomas Waldeby his guardian, and said that no answer ought to be made, because the plaintiff is the neif of the said Gilbert pertaining to a fee of his called ' Lvndewodefe ' in Fryshnav, and that he and all his ancestors being lords of that fee and all they whose estate he has therein were seised of the plaintiff and his ancestors as their neifs time out of mind, craving judgment whether answer ought to be made, that the plaintiff said he ought not to be barred from his action, because he is a free man and of free condition and no neif of the said Gilbert, and put himself upon the country, that thereupon the said Gilbert said that he took it the justices would proceed no further without advising the late king, for that Thomas Umfraville knight his father, whose heir he is, died seised of the said fee, and of divers other lands held in chief by knight service, the said king seized that fee among other lands into his hands, and it was in his hand by reason of the said Gilbert's nonage, craving aid of the late king, . . . .
